International Conference on "National Securtity"
Saveetha School of Law began a new chapter by hosting a groundbreaking International Conference on "National Security in the 21st Century World Order" on the 23rd and 24th of February 2024. This prestigious event unfolded at the Saveetha School of Law in Chennai and was jointly organized by The Peninsula Foundation and Saveetha School of Law.
The main objectives of this conference have been creating an awareness about national security from the legal and constitutional perspectives.
The core institutions involved in frame the security doctrines in government and approach the practice of those doctrine and policies are concerned and discussed in that conference.
The conference commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. Asha Sundaram, the Principal of Saveetha School of Law, representing SIMATS. The distinguished Air Marshal M Matheswaran AVSM VM PhD (V), the President of The Peninsula Foundation, delivered the presidential address, setting the tone for the intellectual discourse that followed.
Admiral Arun Prakash PVSM AVSM VrC VSM (V) delivered the inaugural address, addressing the pressing challenge of national security and emphasizing the significance of institutions, processes, and structures in the 21st century. The stage was then graced by Former Ambassador Rakesh Sood IFS (Retd), providing a special address on "Foreign Policy and Security in a Globalized World."
The conference was divided into insightful sessions, each shedding light on crucial aspects of national security. The first session chaired by Professor S D Muni and Professor Kanti Bajpai, explored "World Order and Global Governance." The speakers touched upon power transitions, clash of civilizations, conflict resolution, and peace in the face of power politics.
The second session, "National Security Perspectives," chaired by Ambassador TCA Raghavan, delved into territorial sovereignty, human security, non-traditional threats, and challenges of development, migration, refugees, human rights, climate change, and internal security.
The third session, a roundtable discussion on the "Changing nature of Warfare and its impact on Security," was moderated by Air Marshal S Varthaman PVSM AVSM VM VSM (V). The panelists, including Vice Admiral K N Sushil, Major General Alok Deb, and Dr. Vijay Sakhuja, explored the evolving nature of warfare and its implications on security.
The fourth session, "Policies, Strategies, and Resources for National Security," chaired by Vice Admiral K N Sushil, covered topics such as national security policy, military strategy, structural reforms, and resources for military power.
The fifth session, "India’s National Security Challenges," chaired by Vice Admiral Shekar Sinha, addressed structural reforms for navigating India’s security challenges, dealing with the India-China stalemate, and securing global commons.
The sixth session, "National Security and Technological Dimensions in the 21st Century," covered topics like security and the military-industrial complex, disruption and innovation on security, and the impact of technology on national security.
The seventh session, "United Nations in Global Governance and National Security," explored the role of the UN and questioned whether BRICS could be the harbinger of a new world order.
The valedictory session, led by Dr. G. Rajasekar, Head of the Department of Legal Studies at the University of Madras, featured closing remarks from Dr. Asha Sundaram, Principal of Saveetha School of Law. The event concluded with a valedictory address, concluding remarks, and a vote of thanks, highlighting the success and significance of the conference in shaping the discourse on national security in the contemporary world order.
Thus, the national security conference is a pre-production for introducing an online course on national security and an elective paper for the legal graduates at Saveetha School of law.
