On 24/3/2021 Saveetha School of Law conducted a webinar on “Features of Consumer Protection Act 2019”. The speaker of the day was Dr. Aneesh V. Pillai , Assistant Professor of Law at School of Legal Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology. The speaker holds high experience in the field of legal education. The webinar was on Features of Consumer Protection Act 2019. A consumer is defined as a person who buys any good or avails a service for a consideration. It does not include a person who obtains a good for resale or a good or service for commercial purpose. Speaker highlighted the Rights of consumers and also discussed Penalties for misleading advertisements. He further elucidated the Central Consumer Protection Authority. The advantage of this concept was discussed with illustrations and also about the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and Jurisdiction of CDRCs furtherly was discussed. The session was informative since most people lack awareness of the fact that the product manufacturer, service provider or seller has to compensate the consumer for any harm or injury caused by a defective good or deficient service. In order to claim compensation, a consumer has to prove any one of the conditions for defect or deficiency, as given in the Bill.

The speaker was Dr Adhilakshmi Logamurthy, a practising lawyer in the High Court of Madras and a social activist. Dr Adhilakshmi talked about the definition and rights of transgender as given in the 2019 Act. She also discussed the discrimination and harassments faced by the transgender community in our society. She addressed the importance of the National Council for Transgender persons. The webinar helped the students in critically understanding the legislation and the inadequacies in its implementation.

Further speaker explained on who can claim maintenance under HMA . Lecturer said the filing procedure in the family cases and documents need to be attached in the family case. He further elucidated about the landmark judgement with regards to assets and liabilities of husband and wife in the maintenance claim. This webinar helped all students to know the procedures followed in the courts with respect of divorce under HMA.
Read MoreOn 21/3/2021 Saveetha School of Law conducted a webinar on "Cyber Crime And Court Room Challenges” The session is handled by Mr. Shiva Surya Narayan, practicing advocate of Madras HC. The speaker began the session with a brief introduction about cyber crime and the laws pertaining to it. He then moved on with the procedural challenges in collecting evidence because of the transnationation nature of these crimes. More often than once these cases are marred by the jurisdictional challenges and the difficulties in handling highly volatile electronic evidence. Investigative officers themselves are not trained in e- discovery and preservation of electronic evidence. This poses challenges in preserving the chain of custody of electronic evidence subsequently for trial. He explained in detail the procedures to be followed while producing electronic evidence in court, including S. 65(B) certificate. He reiterated the need for periodic training to both the investigating officers as well as the judges in handling the electronic evidence, for better trial and conviction of cyber crimes in India.

Also the speaker mentioned Latin terms such as ‘Mare Liberum and Mare Clauses’ which means freedom of sea and closed sea. The speaker elucidated the concept of archipelagic waters and explained the exclusive economic zone and how many nautical miles it is away from the base land. The speaker also explained about the various marine laws under both International conventions and national laws. The speaker quoted the famous De Jure Beli ac Pacis book written by Grotius and explained about the internal waters and the territorial seas. She further explained the international efforts by countries in order to ensure safe and secure trade and commerce between the nations, which actually saved many countries from war. This Topic holds great importance as it brought light on how marine laws help today's trade and commerce and how the marine laws keeps the peace between various countries when it comes to trade and commerce though the high seas.

She discussed the recent amendments and the landmark case laws relating to RTI act and had a discussion on the impact of COVID-19 on officials and the general public. Furthermore she concluded the session by listing out the various methods used by the government officials in combating COVID -19. The session was attended by about 80 students and faculties and was widely appreciated by the participants for its rich content and online interactive Q and A session.

She gave a clear picture about the role of doctors in a death case and explained the importance of the death report made by a doctor. Further she explained the relevance of a report prepared by the medical expert in death investigations. It begins with body examination and evidence collection at the scene and proceeds through history, physical examination, laboratory tests, and diagnosis in short, the broad ingredients of a doctor’s treatment of a living patient. The key goal is to provide objective evidence of cause, timing, and manner of death for adjudication by the criminal justice system. The session concluded with discussion on the importance of such reports in unnatural and unexplained deaths including homicides, suicides, unintentional injuries, drug-related deaths, and other deaths that are sudden or unexpected.
